Listening for Composers’ Intent and Performance Practice Insights in Historical Recordings of Classical Music

Live on Zoom

Thursday, September 23, 2021

10:00 a.m.

We begin the 2021-22 program season on Thursday, September 23, 2021, at 10 a.m. on Zoom, with Mark Bailey, Director, Yale Collection of Historical Sound Recordings.  Back by popular demand, Mr. Bailey will present recordings from the Collection that feature singers and instrumentalists specifically selected, taught, and/or coached by renowned composers in the performance of their own music.  Through these recordings, Mr. Bailey will share how we can glean insights into composer intent as well as contemporary performance practices of their time.

“To hear Frederic Lamond, a student of Liszt, perform the famous Liebestraum is revelatory. Or Victor Maurel singing Falstaff, for whom Verdi wrote the role. Or Leopold Auer playing Tchaikovsky, for whom Tchaikovsky wrote his violin concerto. And so on!” (Mark Bailey)
