Marvin Blickenstaff

Marvin BlinkenstaffThe Case of the Potential Drop-Out.

What do you do when the magic stops? There are numerous reasons why great numbers of students stop their lessons in the early years of instruction. We cannot change many of the familial and societal situations behind those decisions, but we can rethink ways in which our instruction captivates the student to such a degree that they will only wish to continue this exciting discovery: playing the piano.

Nature’s Clues to Interpretation

We know it when we hear it: the performance sounds “natural” and “right.” What are the elements that contribute to a “natural” interpretation?  In this presentation we examine the role that gravity, inertia, breath, and heart-beat play in formulating the interpretation of the music we play and teach.

Chris Coogan

Chris CooganA Jazz Experience with Chris Coogan

Chris Coogan will teach you how to use the Blues Style as a gateway to popular playing.  He’ll show the audience some riffs and patterns and tap into the creative talents of your playing and teaching.  Chris has a multi-level approach and will provide the knowledge and a working experience for the participants.

Piano teachers today find that many students are asked to play in a rock, pop, or school jazz band.  Students often want to study “their” music or popular music in general.  The written arrangements are often very difficult and not even very playable.  His suggestions will speed up the process and get a pleasing and more professional sound.

Chris Coogan is not only an award-winning jazz performer and composer, but teaches many lessons each week as well.  He’ll show the group how to apply his principles to a current hit song before we conclude the session.  An example might be Sara Barielles’ recent hit, “Love Song”.  He’ll demonstrate that the latest hit can be a teaching hit for you and your students.

Allan Evans

Allan Evans, author and authority on historical piano interpretation, will give a lecture on the interpretation and pianism of both well-known and more obscure pianists of the past. He will discuss, with the aid of recordings, the differences in interpretation of our pianistic ancestors and how theirs differs from current day practices. Are those interpretations “more authentic”? If so, why or why not. This discussion will also trace the direct lineage between some of the pianists and composers such as Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Bartok, and others. A partial list of pianists to be discussed is: Ignaz Friedman, Iren Marik, Etelka Freund, Ingaz Tiegerman and others.
